The Bear Creek Secondary School arts department will be hosting its inaugural Wrapped Up Winter Market tomorrow in Barrie's south end.
The event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 100 Red Oak Dr., near Mapleview Drive West and County Road 27.
There will be 42 local artisans and craft vendors from around Simcoe County selling products that range from cotton candy, freeze-dried treats, cupcakes, woodworking creations, candles, pottery and pet products.
“There will definitely be something for everyone,” said Laura Bruno, an arts curriculum leader and dance teacher at the high school.
“We also have performances that will take place throughout the day. These performances will feature our vocalists, our band, our drum line, and our Kodiak Dance Crew,” she added.
Some of the featured vendors include their students in their life skills class, visual arts class, digital arts class and street art class.
There will be kids activities including face painting, arts and crafts tables, and a colouring contest.
Bruno says the money raised from the event will go toward the purchase of updated technology, equipment, and supplies for our students, to ensure they are working with industry standard materials, and have the best experiences in their arts classes.
“This is Bear Creek's first Winter Market,” she said. “We have been planning and preparing for this event since last June, and we are so excited for people to come and spend some time with us in order to celebrate the arts at Bear Creek, and our local artisan and craft vendors.”
Bruno noted there are many opportunities that students have at Bear Creek, “and we are proud to provide such a great variety of arts classes and extracurricular clubs for our students.”
The school boasts a pottery club, improv club, band (vocal and drum line) and also has dance teams, to list a few of its extracurricular activities.
Bear Creek also has an arts and culture specialist high-skills major program for those students pursuing a career in the arts post-secondary in any avenue.
“Interest in the arts at Bear Creek is increasing again since being affected by the pandemic, so with funds raised, we are very happy to be able to provide our students with programming and technology that is industry standard, so they are prepared for whatever they pursue after leaving Bear Creek," Bruno said.
